Getting Started

Overview

AdvisorTools recommends that you read the BOOKS Overview & How BOOKS is Used before installing. This page will discuss the installation of BOOKS on a single PC that is not part of a network. Follow this procedure for all computers that are not networked.
If you are installing for a multi-advisor branch, you should read the  section, Configuring BOOKS™ for Your Office, before you start your installation.

It can help you decide which type of installation is best for your needs. BOOKS can be used on everything from a two computer peer-to-peer network, to a server situation with many registered representatives or financial advisors, an order desk, and replication, but how you will set it up will differ. If you are planning to install BOOKS on a Windows 95 Network, NT Network or Novell Network, click here.

IInstalling BOOKS on a Single Computer
You may have downloaded BOOKS from the AdvisorTools Web Site or have received diskettes. Before you start to install BOOKS, if you have a modem and plan to have BOOKS dial telephone numbers for you, you should know what port (COM1 or COM2) it uses. Your computer should be running under Windows 95. If you are installing for several Financial Advisors, install the branch manager first.
Installing from Diskettes
If you received diskettes, place Disk 1 in a diskette drive. Type A:\setup or B:\setup as appropriate. Instructions on what to do next will appear on the screen.  Follow the instructions as they appear.  Installation will take several minutes. You will be prompted to enter your branch and advisor numbers, and other information about your firm and your branch. BOOKS will place itself on your Start Programs list, but you will need to set up your own desktop icon if you want one.
Installing Downloaded files
If you downloaded your copy of BOOKS from the AdvisorTools Web Site, follow the directions from the download page to install BOOKS. One of the options at the Web Site is to download a file that will create BOOKS diskettes for you.  If you will be installing BOOKS on other computers such as your laptop, AdvisorTools advises making diskettes.
Once you have installed your software, you should Import Your Home Office Data.  Click here for instructions.
Finish Up
If you are installing a single user on a single computer, BOOKS is now ready to use.  If you are installing multiple users on a single machine, use the Add a Advisor command on the Advisors menu to add additional advisors. Then use the File Change user command to change to each advisor in turn. Import the Home Office data for each advisor. Continue adding advisors and importing their data as you did for the first user. If you are installing on multiple computers on a network, Click here for  network instructions.
